Women’s Power Source

This article was written by Barbara Hanneloré, a special woman I’ve been following for awhile now. I reached out to her last year to ask if she would share some of her menstrual wisdom with us. She is the author of the award winning book The Moon and You: a Woman’s Guide to an Easier Monthly Cycle. I’m proud to share her perspective and approach with you as I find it a beautiful way to look at our monthly cycles, looking into seasons and nature for metaphors and parallels.  You can find out more about how to get into contact with her below. Enjoy!

Women have a power source of energy within us that is truly a force of nature, yet we usually don’t recognize it. We’ve been taught not to see it as anything other than a nuisance. One of our biggest blessings has been re-cast as a burden that we must carry!

Our monthly rhythms can be very powerful – we know that! But what if we knew how to harness the energy of our menstrual cycles in a positive way and use them for our benefit?

Our rhythms are similar to the moon, the seasons, and all the other countless cycles of nature, out to the farthest stars. Cycles are how everything works, and when we allow our own rhythms to manifest fully, we align with this larger being – our larger body. We come home.

I imagine it as wheels linking with other wheels, like gears in an old-fashioned watch, or interlocking circles. They all turn together, and if we would only step onto our own little wheel of energy that is already turning, we can use that energy!

Imagine if we opened up to that source of power, which hums along using intuition, pleasure, self-care and balance as fuel. What if we stepped into it? Trusted it, and KNEW that giving ourselves pleasure would benefit everyone? How often do we give ourselves permission to fully relax?

Think of the example of trees – many trees lose their leaves and go into their roots in Winter. Does this mean they are lazy, selfish or unreliable? NO – they are geniuses of self-care! They know they need to PAUSE and sink into their roots, if they want to have full vitality in the coming Spring and Summer.

We can do the same! We can learn to see our month as a whole, with phases of growing “light” and expanding energy, and an equal time of waning light, with our energy returning to center – to ourselves.

Our own pre-menstrual and menstrual times are the Autumn and Winter for us. Just as the leaves fall and the trees turn within, we can complete our projects, reflect on the meaning of things, notice what our discomfort might actually be trying to tell us, gather our energy into ourselves, and dream our deepest, wildest dreams.

After menstruation, through ovulation time, our energy is like the waxing moonlight, or the seasons of Spring and Summer. The light is growing, and our energy is radiant, expanding outward.

Ovulation is the energetic peak of our month, like Full Moon or Summer.

Then, the light begins to withdraw. This is so natural. We see it everywhere, and we don’t need to fight it in ourselves. When we tune in we may find that we are more interested in completing projects, cleaning, or organizing something. We may feel less social and crave time to catch up with ourselves in some way. Our Dreamtime is approaching.

Menstruation can be a mystical time. Try to sense the energy it brings in this new way. Feel the pulse of connection, the pull of mystery.

Just by doing this type of inquiry, women have found that they experience radical changes. Debilitating cramps have been known to go away, replaced by relief at the pleasure of truly allowing oneself to slow down.

Most precious of all is the feeling of well-being that comes from actually listening to yourself, advocating for yourself, and taking yourself seriously, in order to begin to make small changes on your own behalf. This will give you a sense of self-esteem that you can get no other way.

Blessings to you!b.hannelore20_225
